After millions of euros of investment, the TGV maintenance center of the Hellemmes SNCF, near Lille (North), now looks like a futuristic factory, where robots accompany workers and allow them to handle trains .
AT Hellemmes, near Lille (Nord), a TGV trailer must be completely renovated. An SNCF agent uses the shooting of a drone to assess the work to be done. “It’s more interesting than putting on a harness, getting in, it’s less dangerous“, Assures Frédéric Goulois. The 28,000 m² maintenance center has been completely renovated. The rails are absent: the trains are moved by robots remote-controlled by the agents.
Improved working conditions
75 million euros have been invested for this workshop of the future. The working conditions of workers have changed drastically. “We work in a closed, bright place, at room temperature, we no longer work on the rail outside, it is clean, electric energy, we no longer use diesel engines“, Explains Nicolas Comte, head of rolling stock. The high voltage cabling is tested using a tablet: ease and speed of use increased tenfold. Even the cleaning of the site is handled by a robot.
