It is an initiative that helps home support for dependent elderly people: installing a small wooden chalet for them at the bottom of the garden, instead of being placed in a retirement home. Some families meet there.
Having become less independent, an 83-year-old man took up residence in a shed, right next to his son’s house. The latter has invested 37,000 euros in this construction. Ultimately, it is an investment that could be more accommodating than spending 2,000 euros per month in a retirement home. “The house did not lend itself to having so many people, an alternative was quickly needed (…). He is both at home and with us, if there is a problem, I only have ten meters to go“, Explain the son of the elderly and his wife.
Demand is on the rise
The 15 square meters of the shed are adapted to the movement of a wheelchair, and the toilets are designed for people with reduced mobility. At Greenkub, a company near Montpellier (Hérault) and builder of these sheds, turnover increased by 70% in 2020. “The needs are more and more important (…). Discussions focus on safety, particularly in terms of home automation (…) with fall detectors, presence detectors“, Explains a Greenkub employee.
