Fight against the coronavirus: in Monts, a factory helps produce the vaccine

A 19/20 team went to Indre-et-Loire and had access to one of the sites where the anti-Covid vaccine from the American laboratory Moderna will be produced in large quantities from next January. The pharmaceutical subcontractor Recipharm is already preparing to take up this historic challenge.

Vaccine: immersion in a French factory

The American laboratory Moderna has chosen a factory in Monts (Indre-et-Loire) to package its vaccine against Covid-19. “It’s going to be our first vaccine, but we’re used to filling in vials. It is our job and our expertise ”, assures Claire Gama, sales manager of Recipharm. This pharmaceutical subcontractor should produce, with another factory in Spain, all vaccines for the European zone and internationally, apart from the United States.

A demanding conservation protocol

The product is received in frozen bags. It will be poured into vats. “Then we will add a solution with excipients. We will dilute everything ”, says Claire Gama. The vaccine will keep at -20 degrees, but the raw material will arrive frozen at -70. So we had to equip ourselves. The Swedish company has invested two million euros and is preparing to recruit 60 people. For the employees, this is the great adventure. “It’s a big challenge to take up, with a global situation and a fairly significant impact”, emphasizes an employee. The first batches of Covid-19 vaccine could leave the Monts plant, from the start of next year, if all goes well.
