Economy: a price variation that will cause controversy

These figures will fuel the feeling of injustice among farmers. They sell their products for less and less, but prices are not falling in supermarkets, according to a study by the Observatory of prices and margins. Thus, the price of pork sold by producers in 2015 fell by 7% over one year, while the cost in stores remained stable.

The finding is even more overwhelming with milk. Farmers’ remuneration fell by 15%, while its price on the shelves fell by only 1%. Who benefits from this imbalance and from consumers’ money? If we have long pointed the finger at large distribution, the report tends to clear them: their margin would be almost zero for milk, and even down by 1.3% in the butcher’s department. The stores sell meat at a loss, and it is the manufacturers who are accused of profiting from this variation in prices.
