The legendary Mercier bicycle, a French flagship that equipped cyclist Raymond Poulidor in the 1960s, had disappeared from circulation. In 2021, the industrialist relocates in the Ardennes.
The famous Mercier bikes, missing for 20 years, will soon be produced in Revin, in the Ardennes. More than a relocation, it is the return of a French industrial flagship on the territory. A current brownfield site is expected to accommodate 140 employees by the end of 2021, and 270 in 2026. “It will perhaps allow us to bring families back, to put children back in schools, to revitalize the trade a little bit, because it is still important, it is true that 270 jobs, that represents 600 to 700 people“, Explains Daniel Durbecq, the mayor of the town.
Peak in the 1960s
The region was suffocated by the crisis and lost its two industrial lungs in eight years: Electrolux and Porcher, leaving behind hundreds of job seekers. The arrival of this famous name therefore gives hope. The Mercier professional cycling team, in the 1960s, was led by the great Raymond Poulidor. The price war and competition from abroad nevertheless pushed Mercier to disappear from circulation at the end of the 1990s.
